There are a lot of things in life that you can do, but that doesn't necessarily mean you should do them. Painting your roof is one of those things.
So if you've ever wondered, "Can I paint my roof?" we're telling you why roofers do not recommend it.
Paint requires a lot of touchup work
If you're planning to paint your roof once and be done with it, think again. Painted roofs require a lot of maintenance. While asphalt shingles typically last 15 to 30 years, paint on your shingles will only last 5 to 7 years at best, meaning you'll be doing a lot of paint jobs throughout the life of your roof.
Paint seals in moisture
Your roof gets pelted with enough rain each year without adding to the accumulation of water. Painting your roof does just that by trapping moisture inside your shingles. Not only does moisture increase your chances of mold or algae growing on your roof, but it also puts your roof at risk of rot, which could result in leaks.
Not just any paint will do
If you're determined to paint your roof because you happen to have some exterior paint that's left over from another project, you may want to rethink that plan. Not only will you need a lot of paint to cover your entire roof, but it's also important to realize that you can't use just any outdoor paint.
Your roof reaches temperatures of up to 150 degrees, and basic exterior paint isn't going to endure the heat without chipping or cracking. Not to mention, any paint that goes on your roof should be resistant to mildew and algae.
We have a better idea
Because painting your roof is so highly discouraged, you'll likely have a very difficult time finding a roofer or contractor who's willing to paint yours. So, instead of putting a bunch of time and energy into covering up your roof's flaws, why not just find a local roofing contractor in the Columbia area who can actually fix them?
